A Historic Capital District Albany Hotel

The Story Behind Hilton Albany

Undergoing a $14 million renovation the Hilton Albany, formerly Crowne Plaza Albany, has a long and storied history as a mainstay of downtown Albany. The 1st Quarter of 2013 heralded in another milestone for the hotel with its new name, Hilton Albany.

Originally opened as a Hilton in 1980, Hilton Albany became an Omni in 1989 and later transformed in 1999 to Crowne Plaza Albany. Due to its central location and high standard of service, it is often considered the cornerstone of the entertainment district and State Capitol area.

For over thirty years our Capital District Albany hotel has been an area destination and part of the downtown skyline. When it was initially built in 1980, it was the first area hotel to be built in in 20 years, seen by many as a catalyst and leading part of the renaissance of Downtown Albany.

The Albany hotel has been host to tens of thousands of events during its history, including major citywide conventions, inaugurals, well-known galas, and Albany Festival Events.

Today it is at the center of the entertainment district with the Times Union Center two blocks south and the Palace Theater two blocks north. Dozens of restaurants and lounges are located in between offering tourists and the greater capital district population an exciting venue for entertainment. The Thursday “Alive at 5” musical events held each summer are just out the door of the hotel.
